Cast pic: Nasal Fly

The Nasal Fly

Any mage knows what a Nasal Fly is. Entirely miscast spells, incantations gone completely to pot, magic that simply went nowhere. Nobody knows exactly where the Nasal Flies came from or what inane joke of the gods these creatures are, but Nasal Flies are creatures of pure magic; specifically, miscast magic that goes nowhere.

While it is common (And usually dangerous) to get effects you weren't looking for when casting spells, it is also possible to completely botch the spell and result in nothing but one of these bizzare things appearing in a puff of magic.

From its behavior, Nasal Flies apparently have very little cognitive abilities. They simply fly around mindlessly until they reach the end of their lifespans, then they vanish like they appeared, in a puff of magic. Larger Nasal Flies, the result of more powerful spells being miscast, tend to live longer.

What Nasal Flies lack in intelligence they make up for with uncanny luck and a will to live for however long they live. Despite their harmless and benign appearance, they are exceedingly hard to kill prematurely. Of course, given their short lifespans, it's usually not worthwhile to try to kill them. Matthew, however, always tries. He does not like being reminded that his sister is playing with spells she doesn't know very well and tries to take his anger out on the resulting Nasal Flies.

First appearance: September 5, 2002 (Storyline: "Opening Statements")
